Colonel Nicholas P. Vavich Marine Raider Support Group Commanding Officer

Colonel Vavich is a 1993 graduate of the University of Oregon. Upon completion of The Basic School, the Basic Intelligence Officer Course at Fort Huachuca, AZ and the 2d MARDIV Scout/Sniper School, he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines in 1995 as the Scout Sniper Platoon Commander.  He deployed to Okinawa, Japan under the Unit Deployment Program. In January 1997 he fleeted up to become the Battalion Landing Team 3/6 S-2 and deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and Middle East with the 24th MEU (SOC). 

In 1999 Capt Vavich was assigned as the S-2A for the 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) where he deployed twice more to the Mediterranean Sea, the Balkans, and the Middle East. In 2001 he was selected to attend Amphibious Warfare School.

From 2002 to 2006, Capt Vavich was assigned to the Joint Analysis Center, RAF Molesworth, UK. His various billets included: Chief, Expeditionary Warfare Branch; Senior Watch Officer; Deputy, Africa Division; and Deputy, Strategic Analysis Division.  He provided extensive support to Operations IRAQI and ENDURING FREEDOM, Joint Task Force – Liberia, and deployed to Afghanistan with a Joint Special Operations Task Force.  In 2006 Maj Vavich attended the Naval Command and Staff College. 


In June 2007, Maj Vavich was assigned to Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command (MARSOC) as the G-2 Operations Officer and as the Commanding Officer, Marine Special Operations Intelligence Battalion. 

LtCol Vavich served as the Inspector-Instructor, Intelligence Support Battalion and as the Marine Forces Reserve/North G-2, New Orleans, LA from 2010 to 2012 before attending the Army War College in Carlisle, PA. 


From 2013 to 2017 LtCol Vavich served in Okinawa, Japan as the III MEF G-2, Operations Officer and later as the AC/S G-2, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing.

Colonel Vavich graduated with honors from the Amphibious Warfare School and the Naval War College and holds Master’s Degrees in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and Army War College.
