U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command

Major General Carl E. Mundy, III MARSOC Commander

Major General Mundy received a commission after graduating from Auburn University in August 1983. An infantry officer, he has commanded at the platoon, company, battalion, Marine Expeditionary Unit, and Marine Expeditionary Brigade levels.

He deployed twice to Iraq, first as a battalion commander and later as a Marine Expeditionary Unit commander during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He also served in several staff assignments beginning with the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina; The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia; the I Marine Expeditionary Force headquarters at Camp Pendleton, California; the Marine Corps Office of Legislative Affairs; the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization in Washington D.C.; HQMC in Washington D.C; U.S. Central Command in Tampa; the Deputy Commanding General of I Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton, California; and most recently as the Commander 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade at Naval Support Activity Bahrain.

Between these assignments he attended the United States Army Armor Officer Advanced Course and Cavalry Leaders Course at Ft Knox, Kentucky; the Marine Corps Command and Staff College and School of Advanced Warfighting at Quantico, Virginia; the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia; and he studied foreign policy at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.

His personal decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit with a “V” device; Bronze Star; and the Combat Action Ribbon.
