Colonel Gilman was commissioned in 1994 through the U.S. Marine Corps Officer Candidate School program. His principal command tours include: Scout/Sniper Platoon Commander, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1995-1997), Company Commander, Company C, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion (2002-2003), and Commanding Officer, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion (2011-2012).
His principal staff assignments include: Director, Ground Intelligence Officer Course, Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center, Damneck, VA (1999-2001); Battalion Operations Officer, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion (2003-2005); Reconnaissance Advocate and Occupational Field Sponsor, Plans, Policies, and Operations Department, Headquarters, United States Marine Corps (2006-2009); Assistant Chief of Staff, Intelligence, 1st Marine Division (Forward), Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan (2009-2010), and Assistant Chief of Staff, Intelligence, 3d Marine Division (2016-2017).
Colonel Gilman’s operational experience includes deployments with Marine Expeditionary Units to the Western Pacific and Southwest Asia. His combat deployments include two tours in Iraq during the initial U.S. invasion and subsequent operations in Al-Anbar Province as well as two tours in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
Colonel Gilman holds a BS in Environmental Engineering from Montana Tech, an MA from the Naval War College, and Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He and his wife Marianne have two sons, Tyler (13) and Gabe (10).
