We know that sometimes walking through our door and reporting a sexual assault can seem like the scariest thing in the world.

The DoD Safe Helpline is a completely anonymous resource that offers multiple methods of support including online chat groups, a 24/7 helpline, and information about helping agencies at our base.  Their teams are trained on military sexual assault and nothing you share with them gets recorded or divulged to the military.

They also have great tips and resources for first responders, leadership, and those who want to learn how to better support survivors.

Take a positive step and do it at your own pace.

If a person that has been assaulted wants to receive medical treatment and support services without triggering an official investigation, he or she can make a confidential report to any of the following individuals:

- Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC)
- SAPR Victim Advocate (uniformed or civilian)
- Healthcare Provider or personnel (will contact the SARC or SAPR VA)
- Chaplain (will refer you to the SARC or SAPR VA)
- Victims Legal Counsel (will refer you to the SARC or SAPR VA)

When a Marine or Sailor decides to make a restricted report, they receive medical care and counseling without notifying command or law enforcement officials.  The SARC will notify the Commanding Officer of the Installation that an assault occurred without providing identifying information about the victim.  A Marine or Sailor who elects to make a restricted report can always change to an unrestricted report.

Sexual assault victims making a Restricted Report can help the Department of Defense identify repeat sex offenders by anonymously disclosing suspect information via the CATCH program.

For more information, please visit sapr.mil or contact your SARC or SAPR Victim Advocate.

The unrestricted reporting option allows a Marine or Sailor to receive medical treatment, counseling, and an official investigation of the crime.  An unrestricted report of sexual assault can be made to the following individuals:

- Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC)
- SAPR Victim Advocate (uniformed or civilian)
- Health care provider or personnel
- Chaplain
- Chain of Command
- Law enforcement
- Victims Legal Counsel

Details of the incident will only be shared with personnel who have a legitimate need to know. This option allows the victim to request a Military Protective Order, Civilian Protective Order, or an Expedited Transfer and enables the Marine Corps to potentially hold the offender accountable.

A restricted report is still available even if the Marine or Sailor tells someone in their chain-of-command.  As long as the Marine or Sailor does not make a report directly to law enforcement, restricted reporting is still an option.
