Erick Simmel, a descendant of an Office of Strategic Services Maritime Unit combat swimmers and an expert on World War II special operations forces, talks with an attendee at a lecture given on Camp Pendleton, Calif., Sept. 29, 2017. Simmel educated Marines and Sailors from 1st Marine Raider Support Battalion on the history of the OSS combat swimmers, also known as frogmen. These early special operators endured a demanding training pipeline under the tutelage of Marine Raiders. The lecture was one example of Marine Raiders of today honoring the historical legacy forged by their World War II forebears. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Bryann K. Whitley)
